You already know that the fastest way to grow your acting career is by getting people to watch you act. If not, go check out that post right away! But once you’ve got a ton of content that showcases your undeniable talent, what’s the next step?
I WANT YOU TO CREATE A WORMHOLE!
Definition of “Wormhole”: essentially a “shortcut” through the universe—connecting the distant black holes.
See, most actors have their “ish” scattered all around the internet. They’ve got IMDB, a personal website, Instagram, Facebook Actor Page, Snapchat, Youtube, Ispot, and things they’re featured in on other people’s channels. It’s a mess!
I want you to create a shortcut through the universe so once someone finds you and likes what they see, they have no problem binging all your content in one sitting. How sexy is that?
WARNING: DO NOT SKIP STEPS!
Creating your own wormhole is a project I want you to tackle only after you have your basic business tools in good shape. Which means…
- One great headshot uploaded to all casting profiles.
- Good video footage of you acting uploaded to all casting profiles.
Before you have this, there are literally zero reasons to create a wormhole because, well, there’s nothing to connect!
HOW TO CREATE A WORMHOLE
The quickest way to start your wormhole is to create an actor website. Check out my tips about how to do it and see if you’re ready in this post. Your website becomes your central location to link all outside profiles and links.
STEP ONE: Organize Your Assets
So first things first: open up a Google Sheet and make a list of all links relevant to your acting career. Here’s a list to get you started.
- Direct IMDB link
- Relevant social profiles
- Casting profiles: Actors Access, LA Casting, etc.
- Youtube or Vimeo links to all versions of demo reels.
- Any articles or press releases.
- Any other videos you’ve uploaded: Sketches, short films, etc.
- Links to commercials on Ispot or Youtube
- Any other streaming online videos in which you appear. Other people’s web series, sketches, short films.
Now you’ve got an idea about what you can feature on your site. You might create a videos page where you link all content from Vimeo, youtube, etc. And people can just binge-watch all your appearances, no matter where they live online. YAY!
STEP TWO: Drive traffic to your website.
Your mission is to get eyeballs to visit this treasure trove of content, ORGANICALLY. That means you’re not going into actor facebook groups to spam your web address all over them. That’s gross. But here are a few ideas on where to leave your website link.
- Your email signature. If you’ve successfully placed all your assets on your website, then the only link you need in your signature is your website. You don’t need to also include your casting profiles.
- Your social media and Youtube bios.
- On postcards you send to casting.
- Casting site submission notes. When you submit for a casting notice, add your website to the notes section.
- IMDB profile. There’s a section to add your personal website.
- In your Youtube & Vimeo video descriptions.
- On your hardcopy resume.
- Casting profile resume. You can link to your personal website in the notes or under “special skills.”
- In your social media posts when you share a clip from one of your performances.
By adding your website link in these places, you give your viewers a chance to watch more of your acting without working too hard. You’re not directly asking folks to “check out your website,” you’re merely laying out the breadcrumbs they can follow if they’re interested. People like to stalk you under the radar! HA!
WHERE ELSE CAN YOU WORMHOLE?
It’s not just about linking to your website, especially if you’re not yet in a place to need one. But you can find other places to link together. Try these…
- Link to your IMDB profile in Youtube descriptions.
- Add your demo reels to your IMDB profile.
- Create Youtube playlists so people can be guided to the next relevant piece of content.
- Purchase your domain name and redirect it to your best casting profile.
- If you only have one great piece of footage, go to the previous list and link everything to that one video, instead of a personal website.
THEN WHAT?
Once you’re done with all this, you get to kick back and feel confident that you’ve made life easy for fans who want to learn more about you. Now it’s time to get out there and create more content to widen the wormhole. That’s the fun part. Go nuts!
